Without a doubt the most popular festival in Phuket, the annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival is a colourful celebration that takes place during the 9th lunar month of the Chinese calendar, generally in September or October. Also known as the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival is a wonderful mix of tradition and also has a shock factor. The event celebrates the local Chinese community’s belief that abstinence from meat and other negative stimulants during the festival will lead to overall good health and a clear mind.
The Vegetarian Festival takes place over a 9 day period, which requires funds to buy food to distribute to those who believe in the tradition. For October 17th, 2023 Hughes Krupica bought fresh vegetables, fruits and necessary items to the Khorchun Keang Shrine (Baan Ya). At the time there were heavy rains but this was not a fatal obstacle for us. We were honoured that receiving the smiles of those who come to receive food from Khorchun Keang Shrine (Baan Ya) such a friendly.
The tradition of vegetarianism is not just a tradition that has been passed down generationally but it also creates unity and harmony among the people abstaining from meat. It also helps stimulate income to the community.
The tradition is followed every year and for people who pay respect to it – faith remains focused on performing miracles. One such example being using sharp objects to pierce the body of a godly figure. This is a phenomenon that Thais and foreigners are very interested in, and were amazed by the display of incredible bravery often accompanied by injuries and scars.
Finally, the vegetarian tradition is not only a tradition to pass on and celebrate, but also to create unity and power among people who believe in it. Thi includes the concept of being a pure giver without expecting anything in return.
